The Program
Independent Film Institute of Utah offers five basic courses and one advanced Certificate course. The basic courses are outlined below. The main differences between the basic and the advanced course is that the advanced course allows students to make their own films while learning all of the aspects of film making whereas the basic courses offer students the experience of working on these film projects in one of five specific areas.

Payment of the above fees must be made no later than two weeks prior to the beginning of the course. Refunds will be in accordance with the terms contained in this catalog.
Upon completion of each of the courses listed below, students will be awarded a certificate of completion in the area of focus. Each of the basic program courses are one year programs.
Below are the five basic programs available:
Screen Writing
The course prepares, teaches and allows students to hone their skills in the area of writing screenplays, with a particular emphasis on writing screenplays for independent productions. The course also prepares students to interface with the Producer/Director to make the transition from the paper to the screen as smooth as possible. At the end of the course, the student is required to have several finished screenplays as well as the knowledge to be a screenwriter. Completing a screenplay is no guarantee of the students work being produced through the school.
The course includes the following areas of study:

 | SW3 - Advanced Screen Writing. 15 credit hours. |
 | SW4 - Storyboarding. 10 credit hours. |

 | SW6 - Production Rewrites. 5 credit hours. |
A total of 60 credit hours are required for completion of the course. Following completion of this course each student will receive a certificate of completion in Screen Writing.
Production Management and Distribution
This course teaches students the mechanics of producing an independent film as well as the required areas of expertise needed to successfully produce and distribute an independent production. The course focuses on the management of the entire production and provides the student with the necessary knowledge to eliminate costly mistakes or omissions due to inaccurate record keeping while reducing the overall cost of the project.

A total of 60 credit hours are required for completion of the course. Following completion of this course each student will receive a certificate of completion in Production Management.
Sound and Lighting
This course teaches proper techniques for recording sound and proper film lighting techniques for various effects. It also teaches the latest equipment used for these responsibilities.
This course includes the following area of study:

A total of 60 credit hours are required for completion of the course. Following completion of this course each student will receive a certificate of completion in Sound and Lighting.
Cinematography
This course teaches the basics of photography, lighting and composition for film. It also teaches the student the tools (camera, light meter, etc.) of the Cinematographer. This course prepares a student to become Cinematographer. The skills learned from this course should qualify the student serve as an assistant director of photography on an independent film production.
This course includes the following area of study:

A total of 60 credit hours are required for completion of the course. Following completion of this course each student will receive a certificate of completion in Cinematography.
Post-Production
This course teaches the student the entire spectrum of the editing process, including the production controls that will enable them to greatly increase the efficiency of rough and final edits. The technical equipment used for both linear and non-linear editing will be taught. Upon completion, the student will be capable of editing a 90 minute film efficiently and effectively using current linear and non-linear technology.
PP1Pre-Production. 5 credit hours.
PP2Production Control. 10 credit hours.
PP3Editing. 25 credit hours.
PP3Post Production Sound. 20 credit hours.
A total of 60 credit hours are required for completion of the course. Following completion of this course each student will receive a certificate of completion in Post-Production. |
